Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) About the 2021 AAAAI Annual Meeting Going Virtual
It was announced on July 23, 2020, that the 2021 AAAAI Annual Meeting would be moving from an in-person event to an entirely virtual program featuring a mix of live streaming and recorded sessions.
How did the Board make this decision?
The AAAAI Board of Directors and the AAAAI Annual Meeting Program Committee (AMPC) have been monitoring the course of the COVID-19 pandemic and the unfortunate trends that heighten concerns over safety, the need for social distancing, and the financial/economic impact on allergy practice. After careful deliberation we made the decision to change our 2021 Annual Meeting from an in-person event to an entirely virtual program featuring a mix of live streaming and recorded sessions.
Why is AAAAI deciding this in July 2020? February 2021 is so far away and a lot could change before then.
We felt it important to make this decision now in order to assure ample time to plan a stellar meeting in a fully virtual format. It also helps minimize the potential financial losses to AAAAI. Although we are disappointed that we won’t be able to see each other in San Diego, our commitment to providing you with high quality, engaging, and state-of-the-art sessions to meet your CME/educational needs remains the same.
Would physical distancing make an in-person event feasible?
Physical distancing rules would significantly impact the meeting experience and limit attendance at many high profile sessions. Opportunities for impromptu social gatherings and informal networking would also be significantly restricted.
Couldn’t we just move the 2021 meeting to later in the year?
AAAAI considered this option, but knowing that summer and early fall are busy times for our members and their patients, we decided it was not a suitable option.
How much will a virtual conference cost for attendees?
AAAAI knows that institutional and personal funds are limited during this time. We are pleased to share that registration fees have been reduced to approximately half of their normal price, and that we are able to offer the same student discounts we’ve always had. Are you still accepting abstracts for presentation at the 2021 AAAAI Virtual Annual Meeting?
While all abstract and case report submissions have already ended, accepted abstracts and case reports will be presented during the 2021 AAAAI Virtual Annual Meeting.
When will registration open?
The dates that registration for the 2021 Virtual Annual Meeting will begin are as follows:
• December 9: registration opens for Fellows (FAAAAI)
• December 16: registration opens for all AAAAI members
• January 6: registration opens for non-members
As usual, each attendee group can expect to receive an email from the AAAAI on the respective day announcing that they can begin to register with a link to the main registration website. The main registration website will offer registration to the Virtual Annual Meeting, plus an option to request information on the AAAAI Foundation’s Virtual Run/Walk and to donate to the Foundation. Once an individual has registered, they will receive a confirmation email with a link to the AAAAI Continuing Education Center where they can register to participate in the seminars that are being offered. Seminars will have an additional cost and are first-come, first-served. Individuals who are not registered for the Virtual Annual Meeting will not be able to register for the seminars.
What will the educational program include?
The AAAAI is committed to putting together a world-class educational program that will cover the latest in the field of allergy/immunology. You can expect:
• A live program that will take place the originally scheduled meeting dates (February 26-March 1)
• Just over 100 sessions of all types: courses, workshops, symposia, seminars, oral abstracts, plenaries, and keynotes
• Two plenary sessions each day
• Special keynote sessions on Saturday and Sunday
• A Virtual Poster Hall where attendees can view presentations by all poster presenters
Most live sessions will be recorded and posted online for later viewing. Attendees will have a full year to review all of the sessions. In addition, the live program will be supplemented with 50 pre-recorded sessions. These will also be available for a full year.
Will there be a Virtual Exhibit Hall?
Yes, engaging with our industry partners is an important part of the Annual Meeting experience.
Will committee meetings be held during the 2021 AAAAI Virtual Annual Meeting?
Committee work is integral to the success of the AAAAI. All committees will be encouraged to meet in the spring.
Will there be Foundation events during the 2021 AAAAI Virtual Annual Meeting?
Yes, the AAAAI Foundation will be holding a Virtual Awards Celebration (jointly hosted by the AAAAI) on Friday, February 26. This event is open to all 2021 AAAAI Virtual Annual Meeting participants.
The AAAAI Foundation will also be holding a Virtual Run/Walk from March 1 though March 14. Registration is separate from 2021 AAAAI Virtual Annual Meeting registration and is now open.
What about the 2022 AAAAI Annual Meeting?
AAAAI is committed to bringing face-to-face learning back to our members. We anticipate that our 2022 Annual Meeting will take place live in Phoenix, Arizona from February 25-28 as planned.
